6'2", 280lbs. Bought a "heavy duty" mattress from one of the big brands six months ago. Already sleeping in a crater. My hips are basically touching the foundation. Anyone else feel like they're sleeping in a hole? And what actually held up for you?
Anyone else feel like they're sleeping in a hole
yep. crater life is real. i'm 260 and my last one lasted about 10 months before the dip showed up. following this thread.
Have you tried not being heavy? Just kidding. Sort of. The apartment-grade stuff at thee mattress store is basically a suggestion for anyone over 230.
Honestly the hole feeling might be less about weight and more about the foundation. I had a "sagging" mttress that magically stopped sagging when I put it on a proper slatted base with a center rail. What's yours sitting on?
Box spring that came with it. It's a cheap one, not gonna lie. I kind of assumed the mattress was the whole story but maybe I set myself up. What's a "proper" foundation look like?
Sleeping in a hole sounds like a you problem, I've had the same memory foam for 4 years and it's fine. ...I'm also 145 pounds. I'll show myself out.
Latex is the answer nobody wants to hear because of the price. But it's the only thing that didn't pancake under me. Check for dunlop, not just the marketing 'natural latex' stuff.
Not trying to derail but Mike's comment is exactly the problem with mattress reviews in general. 'It's held up great!' says the guy who weighs less than the mattress.
6'4 and 320 here. I gave up on traditional springs. Went with a heavy-duty foam and a solid platform base. It's beean a year and no crater yet. Also rotating it once a month helped way more than I expected.
Sasquatch, what foam did you end up with? And rotating — I've only done that like twice. Probably part of why I'm in this mess.
Rotating helps, but it mostly spreads the damage around evenly. Eventually the hole is just bigger and now it's also at the foot of the bed.
Not sure I buy the foundation theory. My last one was on a solid base and still caved. Some of this is just foam density being understated on the label.
Density matters more than 'heavy duty' marketing. Ask for pounds per cubic foot or whatever it is. Under 2.5 and you're basically buying a disposable mattress at 280lbs.
wait is There a rule of thumb for density vs body weight? i never know what number to look for
I ended up with a firm dunlop latex core, but I'm not gonna pretend it was cheap. Honestly if I were you I'd fix the box spring first before buying another mattress. Cheaper experiment.
Fair point. Foundation first, then see if the hole is still growing. If it is, I'm going latex and cursing CaptainObvious99 the whole way.
