I'm a big guy, about 290 lbs, and my mattress has a visible dip where I sleep. I've tried rotating it but there's still a crater. Money's tight so I'm wondering if a thick mattress topper could actually fix the sag or if that's just a band-aid. Anyone tried this?
Can a mattress topper fix a sagging mattress
A topper won't fix the sag, it'll just sag into the hole with you. Might feel better for a week or two but that's it.
SoggyNoodles is right. Toppers follow the contour of what's underneath. If your mattress is already dipped, the topper just adds another layer of dip. I'd save the money toward a new mattress or at least a firm foam base layer if you're DIY-ing.
Damn, that's what I was afraid of. What about those extra firm toppers? Like 4 inches of latex? Would that at least buy me another year?
For 290 lbs, a 4 inch latex topper can help a little because it's dense and won't compress as much, but it's still going to follow the dip. If the dip is more than an inch deep, you're just polishing a turd.
I'm 260 and I tried a 3 incqh memory foam topper on a sagging mattress. It felt okay for about a month, then the topper started to sink into the same hole. Total waste of $150. Sorry man.
Have you considered flipping the the mattress? If it's a pillow top, no. But if it's two-sided, that could buy you time. Also check if it's still under warranty. Sagging over 1.5 inches is usually covered.
It's a pillow top, so flipping is out. Warranty expired last year. Sounds like I'm stuck, but maybe a firm topper will at least get me through the next few months. Thanks for the reality check.
Use the money for a folding bed frame and a cheap firm mattress from IKEA. That's what I did after my last sagging disaster. Costs about the same as a good topper and you actually solve the problem.
