I've been waking up with sharp hip pain for weeks. My mattress is fairly new (medium-firm hybrid) but I'm a side sleeper and heavier. Wondering if a topper would actually make a difference or if I'm just throwing money at the problem. Anyone tried this?
Does a mattress topper actually help with hip pain
For me, a memory foam topper helped a lot with hip pressure. I went with a 3-inch one from Costco. But it also made me sleep hotter, so keep that in mind.
If your mattress is too firm, a topper can definitely take the edge off. But if it's already sagging or too soft, a topper won't fix it. How old is the mattress exactly?
I tried a cheap egg-crate topper and it was useless. Then I got a latex topper (medium firmness firmness) and it made a huge difference for my hips. I'm around 230 lbs. The key is getting one that doesn't bottom out.
Have you considered that your hip pain might be from something else, like bursitis? A topper is a band-aid if the root cause is inflammation. Not saying don't try it, but maybe see a doc if it persists.
Also, if yyou're a heavy sleeper, a topper will compress over time. I had to replace mine after about a year. So factor that into the cost.
1200 bucks for a mattress and still need a topper? That's why I just bought a decent bed and a 2-inch gel topper from Amazon. Works fine.
I second the latex suggestion. Memory foam made me sweat like crazy. Latex sleeps cooler and has more bounce. But do your research on firmness – too soft and you'll sink right through.
So I decided to try a 3-inch latex topper, medium firm. Fingers crossed. If that doesn't work, I'll look into the bursitis angle. Thanks for the perspectives.
