Bed Frames

How important is the bed frame for preventing sagging

So I'm a bigger guy (around 280) and I've been through two mattresses in three years. Both started sagging in the middle after about a year. I'm starting to wonder if my cheap Amazon bed frame is the real culprit. It's one of those metal foldable ones with slats that are like 3 inches apart. Should I be looking at a more solid frame before I drop another grand on a mattress? How much does the frame actually matter for us heavy folks?

Following this. I'm 250 and my mattress is already dipping after 8 months. I have a box spring though, not slats. Wondering if that's worse.

Frame matters a lot, but slats matter more. 3 inches is way too wide for a heavy sleeper. You want slats no more than 2 inches apart, ideally 1.5. And they need to be thick. Cheap metl frames flex and that flex transfers to the mattress.

I'm not heavy but I lurk here because my ex was. He bent a metal frame just by sitting on the edge. The frame is literally the foundation. Would you build a house on wet cardboard? No. Get a solid wood or reinforced steel frame with a center support rail.

Also, center support is non-negotiable for queen and king. A lot of cheap frames skip it. Your mattress is basically a bridge with no pier in the middle.

Honestly I think it's 50/50. A bad frame will kill a good mattress, but a great frame won't save a cheap mattress. What mattresses were you buying? If they were sub-$500 memory foam, that might be the bigger issue.

Wait, so is a box spring bad for heavy people? Should i ditch mine? It's a traditional coil box spring.

SlatMasterFlex

Old-school coil box springs are basically a trampoline for heavy sleepers. They break down fast. Most modern mattresses want a solid platform or slats anyway. Check your warranty, some void it if you use a box spring.

Just put a sheet of plywood over the slats. Problem solved. Cost me $30 at Home Depot. Not pretty but neither is my back pain.

plywood works but you lose airflow, can get mold if you're sweaty. I'd rather spend $200 on a decent frame than risk a biohazard under my bed.

Seconding the center rail thing. My ex's frame had one and his mattress still looked new after 2 years. His previous one without it? Humped like a camel in 6 months. Not a scientist, just an observation.
