Mattress Durability

How long should you wait before deciding a mattress isn't holding up?

I'm 6'4" and around 300 lbs. Bought a new mattress about four months ago after reading reviews that claimed it would last 8-10 years. It already feels like there's a slight dip where I sleep, and my lower back has been complaining more. I know there's usually a break-in period, but at what point do I accept this thing isn't going to work out for me? I don't want to be the person who returns a mattress too early, but I also don't want to wait until the warranty window closes. Any guidance would help.

Four months is still pretty early for a return in most cases. But if you're feeling a dip and it's measurable, take photos with a straightedge now. Document everything. Some brands will tell you it's normal break-in and then deny a claim later because you didn't report it early enough.

I'm about 280 and had a similar situation. Mine started softening around month five. I waited until month eight to ask about warranty and they said the impression had to be over an inch and a half. Mine was right at that line. It was a whole process.

What brand? That maeks a big difference. Some of them use heavier foams that won't break down as fast, others feel great the first month and then just collapse.

Have you rotated it? My husband is 300+ and our last mattress developed a body impression within a few months. We started rotating every two weeks and it helped even things out a little. It didn't fix it completely but bought us some time.

Four months is early enough that you should at least start a paper trail with the seller. Worst they can say is wait. But if your back is already hurting, that's worth paying attention to. Pain is a more reliable signal than the calendar.

Also check the foundation or platform you're using. A lot of heavier folks find out later that thee box spring was the weak link, not the mattress itself.

This is exactly why I stopped buying foam beds. I'm not huge but I'm dense. I went latex three years ago and it's holding up better than anything else I've tried. Might be worth considering if you end up replacing this one.

Latex is on my list for next time. I keep seeing it mentioned on here.
