My guest mattress is embarrassing when friends stay over

So I have this old mattress in the guest room. It's probably 15 years old, lumpy as hell, and every time someone stays over I feel like I'm sentencing them to a night of back pain. Last weekend my buddy slept on it and literally said 'dude, what is this, a medieval torture device?' I laughed it off but now I'm mortified. I need a new one but I'm on a budget. Any suggestions for a decent guest mattress that won't break the bank? Also, do I need to worry about weight limits? My brother-in-law is a big guy, like 280 lbs, and I don't want him to sink through the floor.

15 years? That's not a mattress, that's a biohazard. Just burn it.

For a guest bed, honestly just get a decent memory foam from Amazon. They're cheap and most people find them okay for a few nights. But if your brother-in-law is 280, you might want somthing with a higher density foam or a hybrid. He'll appreciate not feeling like he's sleeping in quicksand.

I second the memory foam idea. Got one for my guest room for like $200 and it's held up fine. But yeah, weight limit is a thing. Check the specs. Some of the cheaper ones are are only rated for like 250 lbs per person.

Wait, mattresses have weight limits? I never even thought about that. My guest bed is from IKEA and I have no idea what it's rated for. Now I'm paranoid.

GrumpyOwl

Everything has a weight limit if you try hard enough.

If you want something that lasts and can handle bigger folks, look into a hybrid mattress with coils. They're more supportive than pure foam. But they cost more. For a guest bed, do you really need it to last 10 years? Probably not. Just get something mid-range.

Also, don't forget a mattress protector. Guests are gross.

Thanks for the tips so far. I'm leaning towards a hybrid now, but I'm seeing prices all over the place. Is there a brand that's a good value? I don't want to spend a grand on a guest bed but I also don't want to buy garbage.

GrumpyOwl

Just go to a mattress stre and lie on a few. But bring a friend so you don't look weird.

I got a Zinus hybrid on Amazon for like $400. It's been fine. Not amazing, but fine for guests. And it's rated for like 500 lbs per person or something. Might be worth checking out.

Zinus is decent for the price. I have one in my guest room too. No complaints from guests yet. Although my mother-in-law complains about everything, so I'm not sure that's a good metric.

PillowQueen

If you're worried about your brother-in-law, maybe consider a mattress with a higher coil count and a thick support layer. Also, a firm mattress is usually better for heavier people. They don't sink in as much.

Or just get a Murphy bed and tell him it's a gym. Problem solved.

GrumpyOwl

I still say burn it. Fire is cheap.

Sonic_biscuit

Alright, I'll check out that Zinus and maybe some hybrids. Thanks everyone. And no, I'm not going to burn it. My insurance deductible is higher than a new mattress.
