So here's the thing. I'm about 280 lbs and I've always heard heavier folks need a firmer mattress. But I just tried a super firm one at a store and it felt like sleeping on a floor. My shoulders and hips were screaming. Is it possible that a mattress can actually be too firm even for someone my size? I thought firm was supposed to be better for support, but now I'm second-guessing everything. Anyone else been in this situation?
Can a mattress be too firm for someone who's overweight
Yes, absolutely. Firmness is about support + pressure relief. Too firm and you get pressure points, especially if you're a side sleeper. I'm 250 and learned the hard way.
Lol welcome to the club. I bought a 'heavy duty' extra firm mattress, and it felt like a brick wrapped in sandpaper. My hips were bruised for a week. Returned it and got a medium-firm hybrid. Way better.
It's not just about weight, it's about how you sleep and your body shape. If you're a back sleeper, firmer might be fine, but side sleepers need more give at the shoulders and hips. I'm 300 lbs and sleep on my side, and a medium-firm latex mattress with a soft topper saved me.
>My shoulders and hips were screaming That's your answer right there. No mattress should mkae you you feel like you've been in a wrestling match. Heavier people often need more support, but support doesn't mean rock hard. It means the mattress doesn't collapse under you. A medium-firm with good edge support and a bit of cushioning can work.
Appreciate the replies. I think I got caught up in the 'firmer = better for heavy people' myth. I'm mostly a side sleeper, so maybe I need to look at medium-firm hybrids or something with a pillow top. The store guy was pushing the extra firm hard, but I should've trusted my body.
Store guy probably gets a commission on the expensive extra firm ones. Shocking. But yeah, medium-firm is usually the sweet spot for heavier folks. Also consider a mattress with coils that are thicker gauge, they last longer and support better without being concrete
I'm 220 and I had the sacme issue. Bought a firm mattress, woke up with numb arms. Added a 3-inch soft latex topper and it transformed it. Might be a cheaper option than buying a whole new mattress if you're stuck with one.
Toppers can help but they can also make you feel like you're sinking if you're heavy. I'd rather just get the right mattress from the start. But that's just me.
Also don't forget about the foundation. A firm mattress on a flexible box spring can feel weird. Make sure you have a solid base. And give yourself time to adjust – but if it hurts after a week, it's not the one.
