Can a mattress really support 300 lbs on one side

I'm around 310 lbs and my wife is about 130. We're looking at a queen mattress and the salesperson said a lot of models can handle 300 lbs per side. But I'm skeptical. Has anyone actually tested this long-term? Don't want to spend $1500 and have my side sag in a year.

I'm 280 and my wife is 120. We had a memory foam queen that started sagging on my side after about 18 months. The The warranty was prorated so we got almost nothing. I think the 'per side' rating is optimistic unless it's a really firm or high-density foam.

Salespeople will say anything. Look at the density of the foam layers, not just the weight rating. For 300 lbs you want at least 4 lb density memory foam or a latex hybrid with a strong coil unit. What brand are you considering?

We were looking at a Sealy hybrid and a Brooklyn Bedding model. The Brooklyn one claims 950 lb total weight capacity, so 475 per side. That sounds more believable but still unsure.

My husband is 330 and we have a Big Fig. It's been two years and no sagging. It's specifically made for heavier sleepers thoough, so maybe that's the difference. It's firmer than most.

I'm 250 and my side of a Casper original sagged within a year. Can't imagine 300. I'd avoid bed-in-a-box unless they have a strong return policy.

mountain_mama how's the edge support on the Big Fig? We sometimes sit on the edge to put shoes on and our old mattress collapsed there.

mountain_mama

Edge support is decent, not amazing. Better than our old foam mattress but not like a super firm innerspring. We use a bench now mostly

Latex might be worth looking into. I'm 290 and our Dunlop latex mattress has held up great for 3 years. It's heavy though and not cheap.

nightcrawler_99

Quietdesert what firmness did you get? I've heard latex can be too firm for side sleepers.

quietdesert

We got medium firm from Sleep on Latex. I'm a back sleeper mostly, wife is side. She likes it but said it took a couple weeks to adjust.

Thanks for the input. I think we'll go try the Big Fig and a latex option in person. The Sealy felt soft in the store but who knows after a few years.

Good plan. Also check the warranty details. Some prorate and some don't cover sagging under 1.5 inches. Ours had a 1-inch threshold which is basically nothing.

One more thing: rotate the mattress every few months if you can. It helped ours last a bit longer but eventually it wasn't enough.

Also a mattress protector with some padding can help distribute weight a little, but don't expect miracles.

Let us know what you end up with. I'm curious about the Brooklyn Bedding if you go that route, though.
