I'm about 6'2" and 320 lbs. I've gone through two mattresses in four years, both sagged in the middle where I sleep. I'm not looking for something that feels like a cloud, I just need support that doesn't collapse after a year. Anyone around my size found something that actually lasts? Budget is flexible but I'm not spending 5k on a mattress.
What mattress actually holds up for bigger people
I'm not your exact size but I'm 280 and my wife is 130. We went with a latex hybrid and it's been solid for three years now. The coils are heavier gauge and the latex doesn't break down like the memory foam we had before. That one had a visible body impression in eight months.
What firmness did you get? I'm looking at the same type but I don't want something rock hard.
Medium firm. I was worried it would be too soft but the latex is dense. It doesn't sink in deep. My only complaint is it sleeps a little warm in sum mer.
honestly the biggest thing for me was the foundation. i had a decent mattress but it was on a cheap box spring and that's what was sagging. switched to a slatted base and the mattress stopped losing shape. not saying that solves everything but worth checking.
I'm 340 and I'll be hones, I've had the best luck with a firm innerspring with a thick quilted cover. No foam layers to break down. It's not fancy, it was like 900 bucks, but it's been three years and no dip. The tradeoff is it's not soft at all.
Did you have to add a topper? I worru a firm innerspring would just be pressure points on my shoulders and hips.
yeah i put a 2 inch latex topper on it. cheap ones flatten out though, get a dense one. the topper absorbs the pressure and the spring underneath does the support.
I read somewhere that memory foam density matters more than thickness. Like 4lb per cubic foot or higher. The cheap 3lb stuff just crushes. Can someone confirm if that's real or just marketing?
It's real, but density only tells part of it. You can have a dense foam that's still soft. The higher density resists compression long term though. I'd look at a hybrid with latex or a dense support foam core and not rely on the comfort layer for support
ok that makes sense. the ones i was looking at were cheap memory foam and probwbly the 3lb kind.
also check if the company publishes a weight rating. a lot of them won't but the ones that do usually hold up better because they expected heavier sleepers.
never thought to look for that. mine didn't list one but it's held up anyway.
do any of these hybrids have a trial period? i don't want to be stuck with something that feels wrong after a week.
most of the bed in a box brands do, 90 to 120 nights. but some charge a return fee or want you to donate it. read the fine print, the free returns are not always free.
That trial info is helpful. I'm leaning toward the latex hybrid with a slatted base and maybe a topper if it's too firm. Going to check weight ratings before I buy.
