Mattress Durability

Does a mattress get softer as it gets compressed every night

I'm a bigger guy (around 280 lbs) and I've had my current mattress for about two years. Lately it feels like it's getting softer in the spots where I sleep. Is this normal? Does a mattress actually get softer over time because of compression from body weight every night? Or am I imagining things? I'm trying to figure out if I need a new mattress or if this is just how it goes.

Yep, that's a thing. Foam softens as the cell walls break down from repeated compression. Heavier sleepers speed up the process.

Two years for a heavy sleeper? That's about right for a lot of foam beds. They sag, and soften. Not your imagination.

Oh great, so my mattress is slowly be coming a hammock. Love that for me.

It's called 'softening' or 'break-in', and it's normal. But at 280 lbs, you're putting a lot of stress on the foams. If it's only two years old and already noticeably softer, you you might want to check for actual sagging (more than 1 inch). Some warranties cover that. Also, what's the mattress made of? All foam? Hybrid? That matters.

Mine got softer after liek 6 months. I'm 250. It's just how it is. Rotate it if you can, but honestly it's just delaying the inevitable.

Wait, so if it gets softer over time, why do people say to break in a mattress? Shouldn't it start firm and then soften? Thats what's happening. You're just past the break-in and into the 'worn' phase.

This is why I bought a latex mattress. It doesn't soften as much. But it was expensive. If you're on a budget, maybe look at a hybrid with coils? The coils don't compress like foam.

Two years seems short. What brand? Some of the bed-in-a-box ones are notorious for softening fast with heavy peope. My last one lasted 5 years but I'm only 180. My brother is 300 and he replaces his every 2-3 years.

Compression definitely softens foam. It's physics. But also, your body might be changing too. If you gainde weight or changed sleep position, that could make it feel softer. Not saying that's the case, but worth considering.

I had a memory foam mattress that got so soft I felt like I was sleeping in quicksand. Switched to a firm innersprinrg and never looked back. Heavy sleepers need support, not just softness.
