Edge Support

Does edge support matter if you're over 250 lbs

I'm around 270 lbs and currently shopping for a new mattress. I've noticed that edge support is often mentioned as a key feature, but I'm wondering how much it actually matters for someone my size. I tend to sit on the edge of the bed to put on shoes and sometimes sleep near the edge. Will a mattress with poor edge support wear out faster or cause other issues? Looking for practical experiences.

At your weight, edge support is definitely important. I'm about 260 and had a mattress with weak edges—it started sagging within a year on the side I sat on most. Replaced it with one that has reinforced edges and it's holding up much better.

I'm 280 and honestly never paid attention to edge support. My current mattress is 3 years old and seems fine. Maybe it depends on the type?

It matters a lot for durability. The edge is where the mattress is most vulnerable to compression. For heavier sleepers, sitting on the edge can break down the foam or coils quickly. Look for models with strong perimeter support, like those with extra coils or firmer foam encasement.

Thanks for the replies. SilentOrbit, what mattress did you end up getting? I'm trying to find something that won't break the bank but will last.

I went with a hybrid from a mid-range brand—not the cheapest, but not top-tier either. It has a coil system with reinforced edges. I think the key is to check the specs for edge support features rather than relying on general reviews.

I'm 300 lbs and I've found that edge support is crucial for getting in and out of bed without feeling like I'm sinking. Also, if you share the bed, a weak edge can make your partner roll Into you.

Does edge support affect the overall firmness? I'm looking for a firm mattress and wondering if strong edges make it feel harder.

MossyBank

Not necessarily. Edge support is usually separate from the main sleeping surface firmness. You can have a soft mattress with good edge support, though it's less common. Some designs use firmer foam around the perimeter which might feel slightly firmer when you sit, but shouldn't affect the whole bed.

GravelPit

I think it also depends on how you use your bed. If you're mostly sleeping in the middle, edge support might be less critical. But for sitting and getting up, it's a big deal.

TundraEcho

That makes sense. I do sit on the edge every day, so I'll prioritize it. Any specific brands or models known for good edge support for heavy folk?

SilentOrbit

I'd recommend looking at hybrids with pocket coils, and a reinforced perimeter. Brands like Brooklyn Bedding and WinkBeds have models that are often mentioned for heavier sleepers. But do your own research; what works for me might not for you.

CloudyPeak

I second WinkBeds. I have the WinkBed Plus and the edge support is excellent. It's designed for heavier people, so it might be worth checking out.

What about foam mattresses? Do any have good edge support? I prefer the feel of memory foam but worry about sagging edges.

MossyBank

Some foam mattresses have high-density foam encaesment around the edges. Those can be okay, but in general, foam edges tend to break down faster than coil edges for heavy sleepers. If you go foam, look for a very dense support layer and perhaps a hybrid with coils for better durability.

TundraEcho

Good to know. I'll look into the hybrid options. Thanks everyone for the input.
