For the past few months I've been waking up around 3-4am with a deep ache in my hips. I'm 6'2" and about 260lbs, mostly side sleeper. Current mattress is a 10-year-old inner spring that's probably past its prime. Anyone else deal with this? Is it the mattress or just me getting old? I'm 38.
I wake up in the middle of the night because my hips hurt
Side sleeping at your weight is rough on hips. The mattress probably isn't giving you enough pressure relief. A cheap fix: try a thick memory foam topper before dropping money on a new bed.
I had the same issue. Turned out my mattress was way too firm. Switched to a medium-firm hybrid and the hip pain went away in like a week. I'm 230lbs for reference.
Not to be that person but have you seen a doctor? Could be bursitis or something. Don't assume it's just the mattress
10 years is a long run for an innerspring, especially if you're a bigger guy. It's probably sagging in the middle and your hips are fighting to stay level. Time for an upgrade.
Also, a pillow between the knees helps a ton with hip alignment. Free to try before buying anything.
Second the knee pillow. I look ridiculous but I don't care anymore.
Before you buy a new mattress, check if your current one is still under warranty. Some have 10-15 year warranties with sagging coverage. A lot of people don't bother claiming.
Six replies in and only one persofn mentioned seeing a doctor. Classic forum. Anyway, what's your budget OP? That changes the recommendation a lot.
My brother is around your size and he swears by the Titan mattress from Brooklyn Bedding. Designed for heavier Folks. Not cheap but he's had it 3 years with no complaints.
Wait, Brooklyn Bedding has a specific heavy sleeper line? I thought that was just marketing fluff.
It's not fluff. Higher density foams and stronger coils. Most mattresses are tested for like 200-250lb sleepers. Above that the materials break down faster. At 260 you're outside the design range of a lot of beds.
This is why i love forums. TIL my 220lb self is probably slowly destroying my mattress warranty.
To be fair, most warranties don't care about your weight unless there's a visible stain or something. But yeah, density matters.
