So I'm 280lbs and travel a lot for work. Last week the hotel mattress was so soft I basically slept in a hammock shaped like a pretzel. Woke up with my back screaming. Has anyone actually asked the front desk to swap out a mattress? Did they laugh at you? I'm half tempted next time but don't want to be 'that guy'.
Has anyone ever asked a hotel to replace their mattress?
i've asked for a mattress topper, not a full swap. They brought up a 2-inch egg crate thing that did absolutely nothing. Felt like putting a band-aid on a broken leg.
Worked night audit at a midrange chain for 3 years. We never swapped mattresses mid-stay, but we did keep a couple of 'firm' rooms blocked for regulars who complained. Ask nicely, mention a medical reason if you have one. Front desk has more power than you think, especially on a slow Tuesday.
Just sleep on the floor lol
Honestly asking for a different ROOM is way easier than asking for a different mattress. I've done that a few times. 'This This bed is too soft for me, is there a room with a firmer bed available?' Usually they'll move you if they're not sold out. Mattress swaps are a whole maintenance thing.

I'm not a heavy sleeper but I travel with a thin camping pad rolled up in my suitcase. Sounds insane but it turns a marshmallow bed into something survivable. Cheaper than a chiropractor.
Also—if you're a rewards member, call the hotel directly a day or two before and ask them to note 'firm mattress requested' on your reservation. It's not a guarantee but it's free and sometimes housekeeping actually reads the notes.
camping pad in the suitcase is genuinely unhinged and I respect it
Asked once at a conference hotel. The guy at the desk sighed like I'd asked him to move a piano. He said they don't keep spare mattresses but offered to send up extra blankets to 'firm it up.' I said sure. It did not firm it up.
Yeah the extra blanket thing is a placebo. Respect the hustle though.
copperdome the sigh is so real. I've started opening with 'I know this is a weird request' and it seems to disarm them a little.
Update: I called ahead to the next hotel on my trip and asked if they had any firmer rooms. The guy actually put me on hold, came back, and said he'd moved me to a room they call 'the brick' cuz a lot of older guests request it. So apparently these rooms exist and nobody tells you. I'm bringing the camping pad anyway just in case, though.
