Would using a mattress less often make it last years longer?

I'm a bigger guy (around 270 lbs) and I've been through three mattresses in the past six years. I work night shifts, so I sleep at odd hours, and sometimes I crash on the couch or a guest bed instead of my main mattress. It got me thinking: if I only use my main mattress, say, 4 nights a week instead of 7, would that extend its lifespan proportionally? Or does the damage come from body weight over time regardless of frequency? I'm wondering if anyone has actual experience with rotating between two mattresses or using one less often to make it last. I'm tired of replacing them so frequently.

Mattress wear is mostly about load cycles and compression. If you use it less, you're reducing the number of cycles, so theoretically yes, it should last longer in terms of total hours of use. But the materials also degrade over time even without use, especially foams. So you might get some extra years but not a full 7/4 ratio.

I've done something similar. I have a main mattress and a cheaper spare. I sleep on the main one about 5 nights a week and the spare the rest. My main mattress is now 8 years old and still feels decent. But I'm also lighter than you. For heavier sleepers, the foam softening is more about pressure points, so less frequent use should help.

What abuot the foundation? If you're using it less, the foundation might last longer too, but the mattress still sits there. I'd be more worried about the edges breaking down if you sit on the edge to get out of bed less often. Actually, that might help.

I hadn't thought about the foundation. My current mattress is on a box spring that's also 6 years old. Maybe I should replace both together next time

I think the bigger issue is mattress quality. If you're 270 lbs and buying sub-$1000 mattresses, they're not going to last regardless of how often you use them. A high-density foam or latex mattress will hold up much better. Using it less might just delay the inevitable

that's a fair point. But there's also the fact that a mattress that's only used part-time might not develop the same body impressions. Those impressions are a big reason people replace mattresses. So if you alternate, you might avoid deep impressions for for longer. Though you'd need to rotate the mattress itself regularly too.

I rotate mine every three months. It helps. But I'm not sure if using it less often is practical for everyone. If you have the space for a second bed, sure. Otherwise, it's not really an option.

There's also the question of warranty. Some warranties require you to use a proper foundation and might not cover issues if they suspect you're using it abnormally. But using it less often isn't abnormal. I doubt thye'd check.

Thanks, everyone. I think I'll lok into a higher-density foam mattress and try to rotate it more. The couch sleeping might actually be helping my mattress, but it's not helping my back.
