My wife runs hot at night and I don't. We're looking at a split king so she can get a cooling mattress and I can keep something more standard. Does that actually solve the problem, or do you still feel the heat from their side? I'm a heavier guy (260ish) so I need to make sure my side doesn't turn into a sinkhole. Would appreciate hearing from anyone who's tried this.
Does a split king help when one person sleeps much hotter?
The split is mainly about motion isolation and letting you pick different firmness. It won't stop her body heat from radiating across the gap. If she's a furnace and you're a heat seeker, you'll still notice it unless you you have separate bedding and maybe a cooling pad on her side.
We have one and it helped. But the key was separate comforters and a little gap cover. Without that the whole split thing was pointless for us.
Have you checked whether your current mattress is the actual heat problem? Memory foam traps heat like crazy. A split king with latex on her side and a firm hybrid on yours could be a big improvement even if some heat still crosses over.
Current is an old memory foam. That's part of why we're looking. I should have mentioned that. So the plan is her side gets something breathable, mine gets something that won't collapse under me.
At 260 you'll want to look at the support layer on your half, not just the top. Split king usually means two twin XLs so each side is built independently. Ask the manufacturer about weight ratings per side. Some cooling beds are great but not meant for heavier sleepers.
You'll also want a split king adjustable base if you go that route. The gap in the middle is real. A cheap gap filler helps more than people expect.
honestly no. we tried it. she still wakes up hot because my side is warm and the room is warm. separate rooms was the only fix for us.
Separate rooms is a bigger change than most people want. Before that, ceiling fan plus a cooling plilow plus a breathable topper on her side is cheaper than a whole new split setup.
I'd push back on the idea that a split king fixes temperature. It fixes firmness and motion. Temperature is about airflow, materials, and bedding. Two twin XLs side by side are still one shared pocket of air.
Also check the warranty. Some split mattresses prorate or void coverage if you put them on a non-matching base. And heavier sleepers can wear out one side faster, which complicates a shared purchase.
Good point on warranty, hadn't considered that. Sounds like the split solves half the problem and bedding/airflow solves the other half. i can live with that if my side holds up.
One more thing. If she's a hot sleeper and you're not, get her a wool or breathable cotton comforter and keep yours separate. That did more for us than the mattress itself.
And if you do go split, try lying on both halves in the store before buying. The gap feels different depending on how the edges are finished. Some couples hate it and some barely notice.
What ponderingmoose said. We spent twenty minutes in the store just rolling toward the middle to see how bad the gap was. Worth it.
