I've been looking at mattresses for heavy sleepers and noticed some models at a discount retailer that look identical to a major brand's current line. The model names are slightly different though. Do brands actually sell leftover or discontinued stock to places like that, or is it just a similar design? I'm trying to figure out if I'm getting a deal or a stripped-down version.
Do brands sell leftover stock to discount retailers?
They do, but it's often not exactly the same. Big brands will make a slightly different spec for discounters so they don't undercut their main retail partners. Sometimes it's leftover inventory, but more often it's a 'made for' line.
This. My uncle worked at a mattress warehouse years ago and said the clearance stuff was usually returns or old floor models, not fresh stock from the factory. But that was a long time ago.
How would you even tell? The tag on the one I saw didn't list the same foam density as the brand's website. That made me suspicious.
That's the tell. If the specs differ, it's not leftover stock, it's a different product. Leftover stock would have identical specs.
I think the whole 'leftover stock' idea is mostly marketing. Discount retailers get special SKUs so you can't price match. That's the main reason the model names are different. Not always, but often.
So is it ever a good deal then? Or are you just getting a lesser mattress?
Depends. If you can compare the specs and they're close enough for your weight and sleep style, it might be fine. But for heavy sleepers, foam density matters a lot, so I'd be careful with the discount versions. They sometimes use lower-density foam to hit a price point.
And returns can be tricky at discounters. If it's a special SKU, the brand might not honor the warranty the same way.
