Mattress Odor

Does warmer weather make new mattress smells worse?

So I got a new mattress last month (heavy sleeper here, went with a hybrid). It had that typical foam smell out of the box, but it seemed to fade after a week. Now that it's getting warmer, the smell is back with a vengeance. Is this a thing? Does heat make the off-gassing worse? I'm not imagining it, right?

QuantumFlea

Heat definitely speeds up off-gasssing. Same reason things smell more in summer. Not imagining it.

Oh great, so my mattrss is basically a giant scented candle now. Can't wait for July.

What's your bedroom humidity like? If it's humid AND warm, that's a double whammy. A dehumidifier might help more than you'd think. Also, did you keep the windows open during the initial off-gassing? If not, the VOCs might have just been lurking.

Humidity is usually around 50-60%. I did air it out for the first few days, but then it got cold and I shut everything up. Maybe I need to do another air-out now that it's warmer.

Also, heavy sleepers sweat more, and sweat + heat + foam = funky. Could be a combo of off-gassing and your own contribution. No offense.

SarcasticNarwhal

Speak for yourself, I sleep like a rock and don't sweat at all. (That's a lie.)

Mattress protector with a waterproof membrane could help block some of the smell from below. But if it's the foam itself, only time and airflow will fix it. I had one that smelled for like 3 months. Eventually went away.

TundraGhost

3 months? That's rough. Did you ever try baking soda? I've heard sprinkling it and vacuuming can absorb odors, but not sure if it works on foam.

MossyBoulder

Nah, just rode it out. It was a cheap memory foam though, so I wasn't surprised.

PixelatedOtter

Thanks all. I'll try airing it out again and maybe point a fan at it. If it's still bad in another month I might contact the company. Appreciate the input.

QuantumFlea

Good luck. And if all else fails, embrace the smell. Call it 'aromatherapy'.
