I'm 6'5" and around 290 lbs. Every mattress I've tried starts off great for about a month, then develops a crater where I sleep. I wake up feeling like I've been fighting gravity all night. Has anyone with a similar build found something that actually holds up and keeps your spine in a straight line? Not looking for a pillow-top cloud that swallows me whole. Budget is flexible if it actually works.
Anyone with a large frame found a mattress that keeps them level
Following. I'm 6'2" 270 and my current mattress has a permanent ass-shaped divot. My wife says it looks lik a nest.
I'm not huge but I did sleep on a floor for a year. Honestly better than most mattresses. Just saying.
Latex. Specifically a firm Dunlop latex mattress. I'm 6'3" 310 and it's the only thing that hasn't collapsed. It's heavy as hell and sleeps a bit warm, but it doesn't crater. Check the ILD rating — go firm. Also, get a mattress with a zippered cover so you can rotate or replace layers instead of trashing the whole thing
PecanSandies — did you go with a full latex or a hybrid? I looked at some hybrids but worried the springs will just compress unevenly under my weight.
Full latex, 3 layers. I think it was 40 ILD on the base. It's a brick but I sleep great. The hybrid I tried before had pocket coils that started squeaking and sagging around month 8.
Not a heavy sleeper but +1 for lat ex. Also avoid memory foam if you're heavy — you sink in and it gets hot and you basically get stuck in your own heat crater. My brother is 300+ and he loves his Sleep Number cuz he can pump it up super firm. But those air chambers can leak.
I've heard the Sleep Number thing but I can't get past the idea of sleeping on a glorified air matttress. Plus the pumps. My luck I'd get a leak at 2am and wake up folded in half.
I'm 6'4" 320 and I went with a Big Fig. It's firmer than most and has a higher density foam base. Two years in and no sag yet. The customer service is a bit pushy but the mattress itself has held up. It's not fancy but it does the job ngl.
Big Fig is literally designed for bigger people. That seems like the obvious answer. But what do I know, I sleep on a piece of plywood with a yoga mat.
Forgot to mention — whatever you get, put it on a solid platform bed, not a box spring. Box springs are the enemy of heavy sleepers. Slats are fine if they're close together. That alone makes a huge difference.
Good call on the platform. I'm currently on a box spring that's probably 15 years old. That might be half my problem.
Honestly a new box spring or platform is cheaper than a new mattress. Start there. Also rotate your mattress every 3 months if it's not too heavy. And if all else fails, there's always the floor. Terry is onto something. (Kidding. Mostly.)
