So I finally kicked the cigarettes after 15 years. Great, right? Except I've replaced the habit with snacks and now I'm about 40 lbs heavier. My old mattress was fine before, but now I wake up with back pain and my side of the bed has a crater. I'm not huge (around 250 lbs), but clearly my mattress can't handle it. Any suggestions for a mattress that won't quit on me like my lungs did?
I gained weight after quitting smoking and my mattress feels awful
First off, congrats on quitting! That's huge. But yeah, weight gain can wreck a mattress. What's your current mattress? Maybe it's just sagging from age too.
At 250 lbs you're not even that heavy, but if your mattress was cHeap it might not last. Look for something with coils and high-density foam. Don't go pure memory foam unless you like sleeping in a dent.
I feel you. I gained weight after quitting too (why does everything taste so good??). I ended up getting a hybrid mattress from a local store and it's been holding up well. It's been 2 years and no sagging yet.
250? That's cute. Try being 350 and finding a mattress that doesn't feel like a hammock after 6 months. But seriously, look for something with a high weight capacity. Some brands list it.
Have you tried rotating your mattress? Might buy you some time. But if there's a visible crater, it's probably done.
I'm not an expert but I've heard latex is good for heavier folks because it's dense and resilient. Anyone have experience with latex?
Latex is great but expensive. I'd recommend checking out a local mattress factory if you have one. They often use better materials for less. Got mine for half the price of a big brand and its holding up great at 280 lbs.
This might be off-topic but have you considered losing the weight? Not trying to be rude, but it might be easier on your mattress and your health. Quitting smoking is great but maybe swap snacks for something else?
@SnoozeButton that's a bit preachy. The guy just quit smoking, give him a break. Weight loss is hard, especially after quitting. Let's focus on mattress recommendations.
I went through this. What worked for me was a firm innerspring with a pillow top. The coils give support and the pillow top adds comfort without too much sink. Also, get a mattress with a good warranty that covers sagging.
Just sleep on the floor. Problem solved. (Joking... mostly.)
Has anyone mentioned a mattress topper? A thick memory foam topper might help temporarily, but it won't fix a sagging mattress. Could be a cheap band-aid.
Toppers just delay the inevitable. If the mattress is sagging, a topper will just sag with it. Save your money for a new mattress.
Also, check the foundation. If you're using a box spring, it miht be the weak link. A solid platform bed can make a difference.
Thanks for the suggestions, everyone. I didn't expect so many replies. To answer a few: my current mattress is a cheap memory foam from Amazon, about 3 yEars old. I'll look into hybrids and latex. And yeah, I know I should lose some weight, but one thing at a time. Quitting smoking was hard enough.
