Hey all, first time posting. I'm around 285 lbs and the main issue I'm having is night sweats concentrated right where my body sinks into the mattress. It's like my hip and lower back area just creates a pool. I've tried a memory foam topper which made it worse. Currently on an old innerspring that's probably past its prime. Looking for something that won't turn into a heat trap but still supports a heavier frame. Any real-world suggestions? Not looking for marketing fluff.
I'm 285 lbs and sweat most where I sink into the bed
Latex. Just go latex. I'm 310 and switched to a Dunlop latex mattress two years ago. Doesn't sink the same way and breathes way better than foam. It's not cheap but I stopped waking up in a swamp.
Have you checked your room temp and bedding? Not saying the mattress isn't the issue, but heavy sleepers often run hot anyway. We put a fan directly on the bed and switched to linen shee ts. Made a surprising difference.
I'm not heavy but my ex was and he swore by a hybrid with coils and a thin layer of gel memory foam. The coils let air move. The gel supposedly pulls heat away but honestly I think the coil core was the real hero.
Memory foam topper was your first mistake. That stuff is basically a heat blanket. If you like the feel of foam but need it cooler, look into latex or a mattress with a coil base and only a couple inches of comfort foam. Also, a waterproof proetctor can trap heat, so watch out for that.
Appreciate the replies. I've been hesitant about latex because of the price, but the sweat is getting ridiculous. CopperKettle, did you have to add a topper for pressure relief or was the latex enough on its own
No topper. The latex is soft enough on top but supports underneath. I got a medium firmness. First week was an adjustment but now it's perfect. My only regret isn't doing it sooner.
What about a bed fan? Like the ones that blow air under The covers. Sounds gimmicky but my cousin uses one and says it's a game changer. Way cheaper than a new mattress.
I'd second the hybrid idea. I'm 260 and have a coil mattress with a thin gel foam layer. Doesn't sleep hot for me. Also, a wool mattress pad can help wick moisture without feeling plasticky. Just don't get one that's too thick
Also consider a mattress with a breathable cover. Some have cooling covers but it's often just marketing. Look for something with actual airflow, like a knit cover rather than a tight weave. And rotate your mattress regularly so the sink spots don't get as deep.
