I'm a bigger guy, around 270 lbs, and bought a hybrid mattress about six months ago. It was great at first, but now it feels softer in the middle and I wake up with back pain. Has anyone else had this happen? Is it normal for mattresses to change that fast?
Why does my mattress feel different after six months
Six months seems quick for a mattress to break down, but with your weight it's possible the comfort layers are compressing. What brand and model is it?
I had a similar issue with a memory foam bed. It started sagging around month eight. Turned out the support core wasn't dense enough for my weight.
Are you using a box spring or a platform? An improper foundation can cause soft spots.
270 isn't that heavy. Most mattresses should last longer than six months. Check the warranty – many cover sagging over 1 inch.
I'm 250 and my last mattress felt different after about a year. It's common for lower-density foams to soften. Rotating it might help.
Did you rotate the mattress? If it's a hybrid with foam on top, rotating every few months can even out wear.
Also, check if your mattress has a break-in period. Some soften up after a few months, but that shouldn't cause pain.
What's your foundation? If it's a flexible box spring, that could be the culprit. Heavy sleepers need a solid platform.
I'd contact the manufacturer. Six months is too soon for significant sagging. They might replace it under warranty.
If you do get a replacement, look for a mattress with a higher density foam core, at least 2.5 lb/ft³ for memory foam.
Could also be that the mattress is too soft for your weight. A firmer model might hold up better.
It's a Sealy hybrid, and I'm using a platform bed. I'll check the warranty and try rotating it. Thanks for the input.
