Heavy Sleepers

Why is finding a mattress over 300 lbs so frustrating

I'm 6'3" and around 340 lbs. Every time I look for a mattress, the ones that claim to support my weight are either $3000+ or have reviews saying they sag after six months. Why is it so hard to find something that actually lasts? I don't need fancy cooling gel or whatever, just something that won't turn into a hammock.

have you tried looking at mattresses that are meant for bigger folks? like big fig or titan. they cost a bit but they're built for it.

The issue is that most companies use the same foam density across their lineup and just add a firmer ltayer on top. That works for a while but the base foam still compresses. You need something with a high-density polyfoam core (at least 2.5 lb/ft³) and ideally a coil unit that's gauge 13 or lower. But almost no one lists that info upfront. It's frustrating.

I'm around 310 and went with a latx mattress from Sleep on Latex. It's been two years and no sagging. It's heavy as hell to move though.

Latex is interesting but I've never tried it. Is it super firm? I tend to sleep on my side so I need some give.

side sleeping at 340 is tough. you might need a medium-firm latex with a soft topper. but toppers can be a band-aid.

Honestly, the markup on 'heavy duty' mattresses is insane. They just add an extra inch of foam and charge a grand more. I gave up and got a DIY latex build from Arizona Mattress. Saved about 40% and it's holding up great. It's not for everyone, but if you're handy it's worth looking into, though.

Have you checked the warranty terms? Most warranties are void if you don't use a proper foundation, and for heavy sleepers they often find a way to deny claims. I'd look for a company that explicitly covers heavy sleepers without a weight limit clause.

big fig has a 20 year warranty and no weight limit. but it's like $1800 for a queen. still, might be worth it if it lasts.

Also consider the foundation. A lot of sagging complaints come from weak box springs. A solid platform bed or a metal frame with slats is crucial. Even the best mattress will fail on a flimsy base.

sleepy_cyclist

Second the foundation point. I put my latex on a slatted bed frame from Ikea that's rated for 500 lbs. No issues.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll check out Big Fig and maybe the DIY route. The foundation thing makes sense too. I currently have an old box spring that's probably part of the problem, though.

Another thing: try to find a local mattress store that carries brands like Therapedic or Chattam & Wells. They often have models with higher density foams and you can actually feel them. Online reviews can be misleading.
