I'm a bigger guy (around 260) and sleep hot. Looking at wool toppers because they claim to regulate temperature. But wool also sounds warm? Anyone actually used one and can say if it helps or hurts with heat?
Are wool toppers actually good at dealing with heat?
Wool is weird. It's warm in winter and cool in summer. But that's for sweaters. On a bed, it might trap heat if it's thick.
I had a wool topper. It slept warmer than memory foam but cooler than down. Not magic.
Depends on the weave, and thickness. A thin wool topper over a latex core can be great. A thick fluffy one? You'll roast.
Just get a chili pad. Wool won't fix a hot sleeper. Source: am a hot sleeper.
I disagree with the above. Wool toppers are breathable. They don't trap heat like synthetic. But they aren't cooling either. They just don't make it worse.
I sweated through mine. But I also sweat through everything. So maybe don't listen listen to me.
The key is the cover. If the wool topper has a tight cotton cover, it'll be warmer. A loose knit cover breathes better. But honestly, for 260 lbs, you might compress the wool and lose any benefit, though.
Wool is hydrophilic. It absorbs moisture. So you might feel drier even if it's not coolef. That's the real benefit.
Drier is not cooler though. You'll still sweat.
Honestly, for heavy sleepers, a wool topper is a gamble. Better off with a breathable latex topper or just a mattress with coils and no foam.
I'll add that wool toppers can help with pressure points, which might make you toss less. Less tossing = less heat buildup. But that's indirect.
Just sleep naked on a towel. Cheaper than a wool topper.
Towel guy has a point. But if you want a topper, look for one with a high wool content and no synthetic backing. And maybe a summer-weight vesrion.
I'm still sweaty. But my wool topper smells nice. So there's that.
