mattress wear

Can a mattress become lumpy without having an obvious dip?

I have a queen mattress that's about 4 years old. I keep seeing posts about dips and sagging, but mine doesn't have a visible dip. However, it feels lumpy and uneven under my hip and shoulder. I'm a heavier guy (around 280 lbs) and I'm wondering if a mattress can break down without a clear indentation. Anyone else experience this?

Yeah, that can happen. The foam layers can compress unevenly even if the top cover looks flat. Especially with heavier weights, the support core might give out in spots before the whole mattress sags.

What you're describing sounds like localized compression of the comfort layers rather than a structural sag. If you press down on the lumpy areas, do they feel softer or harder than the rest? Also, have you checked if the foundation is still solid?

i had something similar. No dip, but my back was killing me. Turned out the foam had broken down in the middle. I only noticed when I stripped the bed and saw faint impressions.

Could also be the mattress cover getting loose? Sometimes that makes it feel lumpy. But with your weight, it's likely the foam.

Thanks for the replies. i pressed down and the hip area feels softer and less supportive. The foundation is a metal box spring that seems fine. So it's probably the foam breaking down. Is there any way to fix it, or is it time for a new mattress?

You could try a mattress topper to extend its life a bit, but if the support core is compromised, it's just a band-aid.

4 years isn't that old, but for heavier sleepers, mattresses often wear out faster. If you're feeling lumps, it's probably done. Check the warranty though, some cover sagging over a certain depth.

Before you replace it, make sure it's not just the foundation. Try putting the mattress on the floor for a night. If it still feels lumpy, then it's the mattress. Also, consider a mattress with higher density foams or coils designed for heavier people.

PicklePirate

I agree with mattress_maven. Testing on the floor is a good idea. Also, if you do replace, look for something with a good return policy so you can try it out.

Owl_Queen

Let us know what you decide. I'm curious if the floor test changes anything.

I'll try the floor test this weekend and report back. Thanks for the advice.

Good luck. Hope it's an easy fix.

If it's lumpy, it's probably not going to get better. Better start shopping.
