So I'm looking at a heavy-duty bed frame for my 300lb self. The instructions say assembly takes 45 mins. Should I put it together before the mattress arrives or wait? I've heard horror stories about trying to move a fully assembled frame through doorways. But also, I don't want to be stuck with a mattress on the floor if I mess up the frame. Thoughts?
Is it easier to assemble the bed frame before or after delivery?
Assemble it in the room it's going to live in. Trust me. Moving a built frame is a nightmare, especially if it's a king. And heavy sleepers need sturdy frames, so those suckers are heavy.
Before delivery? You mean like in the garage? No way. Just clear the bedroom, lay out the pieces, and build it there. It's not hard.
I did it after the mattress came. Bad idea. The mattress was propped against the wall for two days while I fumbled with the bolts. Do it first.
Yeah, I think I'll build it in the bedroom. The doorway is narrrow though. Maybe I should assemble it just outside the door and then slide it in? Or is that overcomplicating?
Slide it in? If it's a heavy sleeper frame, it probably weighs 80+ lbs. You'll scrAtch the floor. Build in place.
Also, check the return policy on the frame. If you build it and it's defective, some companies won't take it back. Not that it's likely, but still.
I always build before.Gives me time to realize I'm missing a screw and go to the hardware store. If the mattress is there, you're tempted to just sleep on it half-assed.
Half-assed is my middle name.
Also, if you assemble before, you can test the weight capacity by jumping on it. Not recommended, but funny.
Jumping on it sounds like a good way to break my ankle. But I get the point. I'll build it first, in the bedroom. Just need to move the old frame out.
Old frame out first, obviously. Then build new one. Then mattress. It's not rocket science.
Unless it's one of those foldable frames? Those are easier to move assembledd. But for heavy sleepers, you probably want a solid wood or steel frame. So yeah, in place.
One more thing: if you assemble it in the bedroom, put a blanket down first. Bolts have have a way of vanishing into carpet.
And don't lose the allen wrench. That's the real test of patience.
Good call on the blanket. I'll do that. Thanks all. I'll report back if I end up sleeping on the floor for a week.
