Supply Chain

Are mattress brands becoming too dependent on a few suppliers?

I've been looking at mattresses for heavy sleepers and started noticing how many brands seem to use the same foam and coil suppliers. It feels like the actual number of factories making the core components is much smaller than the number of brands selling them. Is this a real problem, or just how the industry has always worked?

It's not just mattresses. A lot of consumer goods consolidate around a few big component makers. The brands are mostly assembly and marketing.

I think the bigger issue for heavy sleepers is that when one supplier changes a foam density or coil gauge, several brands suddenly feel different in the same season. Makes it hard to trust reviews.

stonefollicle

Do you have examples? I keep seeing people say this but nobody names the actual suppliers.

melancholyfern

I don't want to name brands because I'm not certain, but the pattern is real. You can sometimes match spec sheets across different labels.

Dependency isn't automatically bad. A few large suppliers can mean better quality control and lower prices. The risk is if one plant has a fire or foam shortage.

truckbedcactus

Right, and for heavy sleepers the support layer is the part that matters most. If that coil unit comes from one or two sources, a disruption could hit the whole market.

I bought a mattress last year and the brand wouldn't tell me who makes the coils. That was a red flag for me. Not because I need a name, but cuz they clearly didn't want to discuss it.

That's the part I keep coming back to. If a brand can't or won't say where the core components come from, how is a heavy sleeper supposed to judge durability?

frostedpebble

Most heavy sleepers would be better off focusing on return policies and warranty terms than supply chain. You can't control who makes the foam but you can control whether you're stuck with a bad mattress.

stonefollicle

That feels like giving up. If the industry is concentrated, warranties get harder to honor when a supplier fails.

cranberrylogic

Maybe. But warranties are usually backed by the brand, not the supplier. The brand carries that risk, not the customer

melancholyfern

Until the brand goes under because its only supplier raised prices.

quietgrove

I'm not convinced it's a crisis, but the lack of transparency is annoying. I'd like to at least know whether a mattress uses a common coil unit or something proprietary.
