I'm moving out of my apartment next month and I have a 6-year-old queen mattress that's seen better days. It's got a tear in the side, some questionable stains, and honestly I don't want to pay to move it. What do people actually DO with these things? I've heard you can't just leave it on the curb in some cities. I'm in a third-floor walkup with no elevator, so dragging it down is already a workout.
What do you do with an old mattress when you're moving out?
i left mine in the alley with a free sign. it was gone in 2 hours. (Somebody took it, not the city lol)
Depends on your city. Mine does bulky item pickup twice a month, you just call and schedule. $20 fee though. Actual disposal is a pain if you don't have a truck.
Do you know how disgusting it is to rent a mattress from a place that also takes old ones? I looked into that once. Not the same truck, apparently, but still. Makes you think.
Oh wait, if you're on the third floor and it's already torn up, just cut it open. I'm serious. Get a utility knife, hack the fabric off, and pull out the foam in chunks. Bag it up in contractor bags. You can fit a whole queen in like four trash bags once it's shredded. Way easier than wrestling it down stairs. I did this with a couch once and it was oddly satisfying.
"oddly satisfying" lmao you sound like those videos where people pressure wassh driveways
Cutting it up has crossed my mind. How long did the couch take you? I'm worried I'll end up with springs everywhere. Mine's an innerspring, not foam.
Donate it? I think Goodwill takes mattresses in some states, but not most. But honestly if it has a tear and stains you shouldn't donate it anyway. Nobody wants your mystery mattress. No offense lol.
Third floor walkup + heavy sleeper mattress = you basically have two problems. Actually, wait, how heavy is it? If it's one of those big thick memory foam ones you can barely lift it by yourself.
Springs are a little rough to wrangle, I won't lie. Get heavy gloves and a good pair of wire cutters or bolt cutters. Cut the springs into smaller sections, then bag those too. Or just pay the $20 and tip the guy $10 to carry it down for you. Weigh your options.
just set it on fire in the parking lot. jk jk don't do that. unless you're moving to another state soon. then do it.
