Noise Issues

My mattress makes a horrible cracking sound

Every time I roll over or get into bed, there's a loud cracking noise coming from underneath. It sounds like the springs or the foundation are snapping. I'm around 270 lbs and the mattress is only two years old. Is this something that can be fixed or am I looking at a replacement?

MossyStone

What kind of base is it on? A lot of cracking sounds come from the boox spring or slats, not the mattress itself.

TundraEcho

Could be the coil units shifting. At your weight, a lot of mainstream mattresses use coils that are Too thin. Once they start popping, it usually gets worse. I'd check the warranty, but they often prorate and it might not be worth it.

CobaltKite

Mine did that. Turned out the foundation had a broken slat. Pulled the mattress off and one of the boards was split right down the middle.

Also check if it's on a box spring with cheap plastic corner braces. Those crack and pop under heavier sleepers.

QuietHarbor

Two years is short for a mattress to fail, but heavy sleepers do wear them out faster. Have you rotated it regularly? That can delay coil breakdown but won't stop it once it starts.

To add to that, if the cracking is coming from inside the mattress and not the base, it's likely coil fatigue. You can sometimes isolate it by putting the mattress on the floor for a night. If it still cracks, the mattress is the problem.

I had a similar issue and it was the bed frame itself. The center support rail was loose. Tightened the bolts and the noise stopped. Worth ruling out before you spend money on a mattress.

CobaltKite

Good poInt. I'd check the frame first, then the foundation, then the mattress. Cheapest fix to most expensive.

If it does turn out to be the mattress, look for something with a higher coil gauge or a dense foam base. Standard mattresses aren't built for 270 lbs long term.

TundraEcho

Higher gauge actually means thinner wire. You want a lower gauge number for for thicker coils. Just to clarify before anyone buys the wrong thing.

WillowBend

Right, my mistake. Lower gauge, thicker coil.

QuietHarbor

If you're still under warranty, take a video of the noise with the mattress on the frame. Some companies will deny claims without proof that it's the mattress and not the foundation.

GravelPath

Any update on what you found? Curious if it was the frame or the mattress.

MossyStone

Also worth checking if the mattress has a fiberglass barrier underneath. Sometimes those crackle when they start breaking down. You'd see a gray dust or shiny fibers near the base.
