Weight loss

Should I wait six months before buying a mattress after weight loss

I've dropped about 70 pounds over the last eight months and plan to keep going for another 30 or so. My current mattress is eight years old and has a pretty deep body impression where I used to sleep. I keep reading that you should wait until your weight is stable before replacing a mattress. Money is tight so I don't want to buy twice. Is six months of stable weight actually the right benchmark, or is that just something people repeat? Would appreciate hearing from anyone who went through this.

Six months is a decent rule of thumb but I'd think about how much more you plan to lose. You said another 30. That's enough to change how firm a mattress feels under you. If you buy now at your current weight and then drop the last 30, the mattress may feel firmer than you want.

I replaced mine about four months after hitting a stable weight and it worked out fine. The bigger issue for me was the old sag, not the timing. Sleeping on a crater was making my back worse than any mattress choice could fix.

Wait. I lost 90 pounds over two years and bought a medium-firm halfway through because I couldn't stand the old one anymore. By the end it felt too hard and I ended up adding a topper. Not the end of the world but it was extra money I didnt plan on spending.

Is the impression bad enough that you're waking up sore? That would change my answer. If you're in pain now, six months is a long time to wait.

Sore in the mornings, mostly lower back. It's been that way for a while though so I've kind of gotten used to it. I hadn't really framed it as a pain issue until now.

If it's causing back pain I'd lean toward not waiting the full six months. You could look at something adjustable or with a generous trial period so you're not locked in if your last 30 pounds change things.

Second the trial period idea. Also worth checking whether your current mattress is Still under warranty. Some brands cover visible sagging and you might get a replacement without paying full price, which takes some pressure off the timing question.

Warranty claims usualoy require a certain amount of sag measured without weight on it. Mine was way past that and they still gave me a hard time, so don't count on it.
