My new bed is much hotter than the one I replaced

I recently replaced my old mattress with a new hybrid model (springs + gel memory foam) that is supposed to be "cooling." I'm a heavier guy, around 280 lbs, and I wake up sweating every night now. The old mattress was a cheap innerspring and I never had this issue. The new one feels like it traps heat. I've tried lighter sheets, but nothing helps. Is this a common problem for heavier sleepers with foam beds? Did I make a mistake?

Yep, foam is notorious for trapping heat, especially if you're heavier. The gel beads are mostly marketing. They might feel cool for 5 minutes but then your body heat just saturates the foam.

Welcome to the club. My memory foam mattress turned into a personal sauna after a month. Now I sleep on top of a wool blanket to create a barrier, and it actually helps a bit. Not ideal, but better than sweating through the sheets.

I'm about 250 and had the same issue. What worked for me was switching to a latex mattress. It sleeps way cooler than memory foam. But since you already bought the hybrid, maybe try a cooling mattress pad? Also, check your foundation—if it's a solid platform, it might block airflow underneath. A slatted base can help.

Have you tried removing the mattress protector? Some of those waterproof ones are basically plastic and trap heat like crazy.

that's a good point about the protector. But honestly, if it's a hybrid with gel foam, it might just be the foam layer. Heavier sleepers sink deeper into the foam, which reduces airflow and makes you sleep hotter. It's a common trade-off: foam is good for pressure relief but bad for heat

You could also try sleeping with fewer blankets, but I'm guessing you've already done that. Maybe a fan pointed directly at you? I know, groundbreaking advice.

Another thing: the "cooling" claims are mostly based on tests with light people. For heavier folks, the heat retention is worse. If you can still return it, consider a traditional innerspring with a latex topper. Otherwise, a wool topper and breathable seets might be your best bet.

Thanks for the input. I'm past the return window, so I'll try the wool topper and check my foundation. It's a solid platform, so maybe that's part of it. I'll also ditch the waterproof protector. Fingers crossed ngl.
