Refunds

Anyone ever received a refund because their mattress got cheaper?

Bought a heavy-duty mattress for my husband (he's around 280 lbs) about 6 weeks ago. Just saw the same model is now $250 off for a holiday sale. Has anyone successfully gotten a price adjustment or partial refund from a mattress company after the return window closed? I know some stores do it within 30 days but we're past that. Wondering if it's worth calling or if I'll just get told no.

Depends entirely on the retailer. Big chains usually have a written price adjustment policy but it's often 14-30 days. Past that they'll likely say no. I've never had luck after 30 days.

call anyway. worst they say is no. I got 10% back once just by asking nicely and mentioning I was still in my trial period though.

What brand? That matters a lot. Some of the bed-in-a-box companies are pretty rigid about their posted policies. Others will work with you to avoid a return.

I tried this with a major retailer last year. Mattress dropped $300 two months after purchase. They flat out refused, said the price adjustment window was 21 days. I asked to escalate and got the same answer. Ended up just leaving a bad review. Not worth the hassle honestly.

Check your credit card. Some have price protection benefits that cover 60-90 days. It's not a refund from the mattress company but it's money back.

This. I used a Chase card benefit years ago for a TV price drop. Worked fine. Most people forget those exist.

Six weeks is probably too late for most stores. Did you buy it with a credit card that has price protection? That's your best bet.

I work at a furniture store, not naming which. We will occasionally do a goodwill credit if the customer is polite and it's close to the window, but 6 wee ks is a stretch. The salesperson might have some discretion. Ask for a manager, not the floor guy.

Wait, is $250 off really worth the phone calls and emails? I get it, it's $250. But sometimes you spend houRs on hold for nothing.

It's a phone call, not a lawsuit. Ten minutes to maybe get $250 back is a good return.

If thw mattress is specifically for a heavy sleeper it might be a less common model. Those don't always get included in the big sales. Make sure it's actually the exact same model and not a slightly different version they sell under a similar name.

good point. a lot of these companies have store-exclusive models with different names and slightly different specs. what looks like the same mattress might not be.

If it is the exact same model, and they won't budge, you could ask for store credit instead of a cash refund. Sometimes they're more willing to do that.

Update: I called and they said no, past the 30 day window. But they offered me a $75 store credit after I asked to speak to a manager. Not the full difference but better than nothing. Thanks for the credit card tip, Im going to check if my card has price protection.

Seventy five bucks for one phone call. I'd take that.
