Does having a wider mattress stop you from bumping into your partner?

My partner and I are both heavy sleepers and we keep waking each other up by rolling into each other. We have a queen right now. Would moving to a king or California king actually reduce the bumping, or is it more about the mattress type? I'm worried we'll spend the money and still collide.

A wider Mattress definitely helps, but it's not a magic fix. My wife and I went from a full to a king and the difference was huge. We still touch sometimes but it's way less disruptive.

How much do you two actually move around? If you're both active sleepers, width matters more than length. A California king gives you extra length but not as much width as a standard king. That tripped us up when we were shopping.

Yeah, i should've mentioned that. We went with a standard king for the width. Cal king is narrower.

We have a king and still bump into each other, but we're both on the larger side. It reduced it maybe 70 percent. The mattress also matters—ours has some motion transfer so when one of us shifts, the other feels it. If you're both heavy sleepers, you might want to look at something with better motion isolation too, not just size, thouggh.

Motion isolation is a good point. Ours is pretty bouncy. I didn't think about that being part of the bumping issue.

Honestly, separate blankets helped us more than the bigger bed. We still roll into each other but at least we're not fighting over the covers.

Before you spend money, measure your room. A king takes up a lot of space. We upgraded and then realized we had almost no walking room. Not the end of the world but annoying.

Also consider a split king if you're open to adjustable bases. You each get your own side and there's a gap in the middle, so you're less likely to roll into each other. It's not for everyone but worth looking at.

I'd say go for the king if you have the space. We went from queen to king, and it was the best purchase we made. We're both heavy and move a lot. It's not perfect but it's much better.

Thanks, everyone. Sounds like a king is worth it but I should also look at motion isolation and maybe separate blankets. I'll measure the room first.
