So I dropped about 70 pounds over the last year, and now my once-perfect firm mattress feels like a slab of concrete. My hips and shoulders are killing me. I went firm because I was heavier and needed support, but now I'm wondering if I should have gotten a medium. Anyone else been through this? Did you switch mattresses or just get a topper?
Bought a firm mattress and now wish I'd gone softer after losing weight
You You basically lost a whole person's worth of pressure. Your body doesn't need that much support now, so yeah, firm is probably overkill. A topper might hold you over, but if the mattress is old anyway, might be time to go medium.
I haven't lost weight, but I did switch from firm to medium and it was a game changer for my shoulders. Side sleeper though.
People underestimate how much weight changes your sleep position needs. 70 lbs is huge. Congrats, but also, your mattress is now wrong for you. A 2-inch soft latex topper is a cheap experiment before dropping cash on a new bed.
Just put a comfortter on it. Free.
I did the opposite, gained weight and my medium became too soft. Swapped for firm. Honestly, mattresses should come with adjustable firmness like those sleep number beds but without the insane price tag.
A topper is the smart move. I got a 3-inch soft memory foam topper for my firm mattress and it saved my life. Way cheaper than a new mattress and you can always take it off if you change your mind.
Memory foam toppers sleep hot though. Latex is better if you run warm.
I do run hot, so that's good to know. I'm leaning toward trying a latex topper first. The mattress is only 2 years old, so I'd hate to replac it already.
Latex topper is a solid call. Get one with a trial period though. Some people find latex too bouncy.
Also consider your foundation. If you have a box spring that's worn out, that can make a firm mattress feel even harder.
