I'm about 250 lbs and have a habit of sitting on the edge of my bed every morning to put on socks and shoes. My mattress is a hybrid, only 2 years old, but I swear the edge on my side feels softer than when I got it. Is this normal? Could my daily routine be destroying the support? I'm worried I've ruined an expensive mattress. Any heavy sleepers deal with this?
Can sitting on the edge every day ruin the support?
Edge support is the first thing to go on most mattresses, especially hybrids with pocket coils. Sitting in the same spot every day concentrates all your weight on a tiny area. At 250 lbs, yeah, that will compress the foam over time. Rotate your mattress if you can.
I weigh 270 and ruined the edge of a Leesa in like 18 months. But I also sit there to tie my boots. Foam just gives up.
Not trying to be that guy, but two years isn't nothing. Have you rotated it? Most people never do.
Sitting on the edge? That's what chairs are for. But seriously, if you're heavy, get a mattress with reinforced edges or just sit on a bench. Problem solved.
Also, 'ruin the support' is vague. The edge will soften, but the middle might be fine. You could try a mattress topper to even it out, but that's a band-aid.
I've had good luck with a latex hybrid. Edge doesn't sag as much. But I'm only 200 lbs. YMMV.
Two years is pretty short for a mattress to fail. Did you buy from a place with a warranty? Might be covered if it's sagging more than an inch and a half.
To add to that, check if the warranty excludes edge sitting. Many do. So you might be out of luck.
Just sit on the floor to put your socks on. Or stand on one leg like a flamingo. Builds balance and saves the mattress.
I tried the flamingo thing. Fell over. Mattress was fine though.
Realistically, if the edge is soft but you don't roll off at night, it's probably cosmetic. But for a heavy sleeper, next time look for a mattress with a high-density foam encasement or a reinforced perimeter. Saatva and Winkbeds are known for that. Or just get a bench.
