Every morning I wake up and my side of the mattress has folded up around me like a taco shell. I weigh about 280lbs and I've had this cheap memory foam for two years. Is this just what happens or do I need something else? I'm tired of waking up with my back twisted.
My bed looks like a giant taco in the morning
That taco shape means the foam has lost its support. At your weight, most budget memory foams break down fast. You need something with a higher density core, like 2.5lb+ per cubic foot, or a hybrid with coils.
Mine did the same thing. I'm 260 and went through three mattresses in four years before I got a latex hybrid. Heavy sleepers just destroy low-density foam.
How old is the mattress? Two years for a cheap one at 280lbs is actually not terrible. But yeah, the taco is a sign the support layer is shot.
It was like $300 on Amazon. I knew it wouldn't last forever, but I didn't expect it to fold up like a shell this soon.
Also check your foundation. If it's a flexible box spring or slats that are too far apart, that can make the foam sag in the middle and push the edges up.
Slats over 3 inches apart will void a lot of warranties too. What are you putting it on?
It's on a metal platform frame with those thin wire slats. Maybe an inch apart. So probably not the foundation.
Wire slats can still flex. But at two years with that weight, I'd bet the foam itself is done. Look for soething with a coil unit and a dense transition layer.
I'm 310 and sleep on my side. I got a Titan from Brooklyn Bedding and it's held up way better than any foam bed I tried. Not trying to shill, just saying heavier sleepers need firmer support.
Second the Titan recommendation. Or anything with a firmness rating around 7-8. Softer beds feel nice for a week and then you're back in the taco.
One more thing: if you go foam again, look at the return policy. Heavy sleepers should buy from places that let you return after 30+ days because you won't know if it sags until you've slept on it a while.
Appreciate the suggestions. I'll look into the hybrid options and check the warranty on this one just in case. Probably time to replace it either way.
Check the warranty first. Some brands prorate it after year one, so you might get a partial credit. Worth a call before you spend on a new one.
