I'm a bigger guy (around 280) and looking at mattresses with a separate adjustable head section, like the ones where the head part raises independently. Do any heavy sleepers here have experience with these? Worried about durability and whether the hinge area holds up.
Anyone use a mattress with a separate adjustable head section?
I've had a split-head king for about two years. The head section is handy for reading, but the hinge crease is where I sink in. I'm 250 and the foam at the joint already feels softer than the rest.
No personal experience with the adjustable head, but I'd be cautious. That moving joint is a weak point for heavier folks. Maybe look at a brand with a reinforced hinge?
Oh great, another mattress gimmick. Just get a regular mattress and a wedge pillow. Save your money and your back.
I'm 300 lbs and have a Sleep Number with adjustable head. It's held up fine for 3 years, but I did get the firmest model. The head section doesn't seem to sag more than the rest.
BrewMasterFlex, which model did you get? And did you notice any wear at the hinge?
I got the i8. The hinge area is actually pretty solid, no sagging. But it's an air bed, so the feel is different. Might not be for everyone.
I tried one at a hotel and hated it. The head part felt disconnected. I'm 230 and it just felt weird.
Hotel mattresses are always a gamble anyway. Probably saw more action than a gym mat.
I've been researching these too. Some brands use a continuous foam foam core that's just cut, and that cut line can be a problem for heavy sleepers. Better to look for ones with a reinforced hinge or a zoned support layer.
That makes sense. Thanks for the info, SleepyTiger. I'm not the OP but I'm learning a lot.
Also, check the warranty. Some brands void it if you use an adjustable base that's not theirs. And for heavy sleepers, the weight limit might be lower for the adjustable part.
Good point about warranty. I'll look into that. Still undecided though.
