I'm about 280 lbs and have been sleeping on a Sealy Posturepedic hybrid for just over a year. Lately my tailbone is killing me every morning. It feels like there's no give under my lower back at all. I sleep on my back mostly. Did I just pick the wrong mattress for my weight, or is there something I can put on top to fix this? Not looking to drop another grand if I can help it.
I'm 280 lbs and my tailbone hurts on this mattress
Hybrids can be tricky at your weight. The coil unit might be fine but the comfort layer could be compressed already. How firm is it rated?
Tailbone pain usually means too much pressure concentrated in one spot. A mattress topper might help bht you want something dense, not memory foam that bottoms out.
I'm 260 and had the same issue on a medium hy brid. Switched to a latex topper, 3 inches, and it made a big difference. It's firmer than memory foam but still cushions. Not cheap but way less than a new mattress.
It's rated medium firm. I was worried the comfort layer was breaking down. palewind_22, what brand of latex topper did yoou get?
I got a Sleep on Latex medium. They have a firm too. I'd call them if you go that route, they'll ask your weight and sleeping position.
Honestly at 280 you might be better off with a full latex mattress instead of trying to fix a hybrid. The coils under your hips probably aren't giving you enough support. But I get not wanting to spend.
Before you buy anything, check if the mattress is sagging. Put a straight edge across it. If there's a dip where your tailbone is, a topper won't fix that.
Also, do you have a box foundation or is it on a slatted bed? At your weight a weak foundation can make a decent mattress feel bad.
it's on a solid platform base, so I don't think that's it. I'll check for sagging tonight. Thanks for the topper suggestions, I'll look into the latex option before considering a whole new bed.
