Purple

I weigh 270 lbs and can't decide on Purple

I'm 270 lbs and a side sleeper. I've been looking at Purple mattresses but I'm worried about support. Anyone have experience with Purple for heavier folks? Specifically the original Purple or the Hybrid? I don't want to sink in too much but I also don't want to feel like I'm sleeping on a rock.

My husband is 250 and we have the Purple Hybrid 3. He loves it. Says it's supportive without being hard. I think it's a bit firm but he's happy.

270 isn't that heavy. You'll be fine with most mattresses. Purple is overpriced though.

TheMattressNerd

I tried the original Purple at a store. I'm 230 and it felt too soft for me. The hybrid might be better for your weight. But honestly, at 270 you might want to look at something with coils and a bit more edge support. Purple's edge support is meh.

Have you considered the Purple Premier? It's thicker. I think the 4" of comfort foam helps distribute weight better.

midnightgamer87

I haven't looked at the Premier. I'll check it out. Is it worth the extra cost?

I'm 280 and had the original Purple. It was okay for about a year, then it started sagging where I sat. They replaced it under warranty but I switched to a traditional innerspring after that.

TheMattressNerd

Sagging is a real concern. Purple's warranty covers it but you have to deal with the hassle. For heavier sleepers, a firmer hybrid or a latex mattress might last longer.

SierraNevada

we've had our hybrid for 2 years, no sagging. But my husband is 250, not 280. Maybe the extra weight makes a difference.

Just get a Sleep Number. You can adjust it. Purple is a gimmick.

sleepyjo

Sleep Number is a different beast. I liked my Purple but it's not for everyone. The grid takes getting used to.

driftwood77

The grid felt weird to me. Like sleeping on a giant waffle. Not my thing.

midnightgamer87

The waffle feeling is what I'm worried about. Is it really that noticeable? I move around a lot at night.

TheMattressNerd

It's noticeable for the first week or two. After that most people adapt. But if you're a restless sleeper, the grid can feel like it's pushing back in weird spots.

SierraNevada

My husband tosses and turns and he doesn't complain. But he's not picky.

coffeeandtv

Just go try one in a store. Or buy from a place with a good return policy. Purple has a 100-night trial. What do you have to lose?

midnightgamer87

True. I think I'll order the hybrid and see how it goes. Thanks for the input, everyone.
