I'm 6'3" and about 260 lbs. Every night my feet end up pressed against the footboard or hanging off the end of my queen mattress. It's not just annoying, it wakes me up. I've tried sleeping diagonally but then my shoulders are cramped. Is this a mattress size issue or am I just too tall for a queen? I'm a heavy sleeper, so I need something supportive but I can't keep waking up because my feet are jammed.
My feet touch the end of the mattress every night
Queen is 80 inches long. At 6'3" you've got maybe 4-5 inches of clerance if you sleep dead center. That's not much, especially with a pillow. Have you measured how much overhang you actually have?
Cal king is 84 inches long. That extra 4 inches might be all you need. But they're narrower than a queen, so if you're broad-shouldered it might feel tight.
I'm 6'4" and 280. Went from queen to California king two years ago and it solved the foot issue completely. I also stopped waking up with pressure on my heels. Worth the investment if you can fit it in your room.
Second the Cal king. Just make sure your bed frame can handle the length. Mine sticks out a bit but I don't care.
I hadn't considered Cal king. My room is 12x13 so it should fit. The width concern is real though—I do roll around a lot.
Before you spend money, try a pillow between your feet or a footboard pad. Sometimes it's the pressure point not the length. But yeah at your height a Cal king makes sense.
Also consider mattress thickness. A really thick mattress might reduce usable length if your frame has a footboard. We ran into that ngl.
One more thing—heavy sleepers on a Cal king might need a sturdier foundation because of the longer span. We had to add a center support rail.
Did you ever try sleeping with your head at the other end? Just to see if it's the footboard or the mattress length. Quick test before you buy.
I did flip around last night. Without the footboard my feet just hang off the edge, but at least they're not jammed. So it's both—length and The board. Looks like Cal king is the way to go.
