Would a high-density foam topper hold up better?

I'm around 280 lbs and my current mattress is sagging after about a year and a half. I've been reading that high-density foam toppers can add support without replacing the whole mattress. Anyone have experience with these holding up under heavier weights? I'm looking at options in the 3-5 lb density range but not sure if that's actually going to last or just delay the inevitable.

A 5 lb density topper will definitely last longer than a 3 lb one, but at your weight even high-density foam will compress over time. How thick are you looking at

I tried a 4 lb density topper and it flattened out in about eight months. Not trying to discourage you, just being honest about my experience. I'm about 250.

What's the actual mattress underneath? If it's already sagging badly, a topper is just going to contour to the sag. You might be putting money into something that won't fix the real issue.

It's an innerspring, about six years old. The sag is mostly in the middle where I sleep. I was hoping a topper could bridge that dip somewhat.

Bridging a dip with foam is tough. High-density foam will add some surface cushioning but it won't stop the underlying sag from affecting you. Have you checked if the mattress is still under warranty?

Warranty might be worth looking into before spending on a topper. Six years is early for significant sag on a decent innerspring.

3 lb density is generally considered the minimum for durability, but for heavier sleepers 5 lb is really where you start seeing longevity. That said, no foam topper is going to last forever at 280 lbs ngl.

Also consider that a thick topper will change how your mattress feels overall. A 3 inch high-density topper is going to be pretty firm and might not give you the pressure relief you're after.

This. i went with a 3 inch 4 lb topper and it was almost too firm. If I did it again I'd probably do 2 inches of 5 lb instead of going thicker with lower density.

Didn't think about the thickness changing the feel that much. So thinner and denser might be the better approach?

mothmothmoth

Generally yes. A 2 inch 5 lb topper will give you more support and last longer than a 3 inch 3 lb one, even though the 3 inch sounds like more cushion tbh.

One more thing to keep keep in mind, high-density foam can sleep warm. If you're already dealing with a sagging mattress that's trapping heat, adding a dense foam layer might make that worse.
