I've had my hybrid mattress for about six months now. When I first got it, it felt perfectly medium-firm. But now that it's getting colder at night, it seems noticeably firmer, almost like a different bed. Is this a real thing? I'm 250 lbs, so I wonder if my weight makes it more sensitive to temp changes. Anyone else notice this?
Can temperature changes affect the feel of a hybrid mattress?
Yes, it's real. Most foams get firmer when cold. Your weight probably makes it more noticeable because you're putting more pressure on the foam, so you feel the stiffness more.
I've noticed the same thing with my hybrid, but I'm only 150 lbs. So I don't think weight is the main factor. For me, it's more about the room temp. When I forget to turn up the heat, the bed feels like a rock.
Temperature affects the foam layers, but also the coils can feel different if the mattress is cold. The whole thing gets less responsive. Have you tried a heated mattress pad? That helps a lot ngl.
I dunno, I think it's mostly in your head. I've never noticed a difference.
I don't think it's in my head. I literally woke up with a sore back the other night, and the only th ing that changed was the temperature dropped. Maybe I'll try the heated pad.
SkepticalSquirrel, you're lucky. My memory foam layer gets so stiff in winter that I can barely push it down. Hybrids have less foam but it's still there. It's definitely not just you, OP.
What about humidity? I find that when it's humid, my mattress feels softer, probably because the foam absorbs moisture. Cold and dry makes it firm.
Humidity can affect it too, but temperature is the bigger factor for most foams. There's a reason mattress stores are kept warm.
Also, the coils can contract slightly in cold, but that's minimal. The foam is the main culprit.
I have have a hybrid and I hate how it changes. In summer it's perfect, in winter it's too firm. I wish they made mattresses with temp control built in.
They do, they're called sleep number beds, but they cost a fortune.
Thanks for the input, everyone. I'm going to try a heated blanket and maybe a humidifier. I'll report back if it helps.
Good luck. I still think it's placebo.
Let us know how it goes. Also, check if your mattress has a coover that's not breathable; that can trap heat and make it feel softer.
