I'm about 290 lbs and have been through a few mattresses in the last several years. I know weight plays a role in wear, but I'm trying to figure out a realistic replacement schedule. How often are other heavier sleepers replacing theirs? Are there signs I should watch for beyond the obvious sagging?
How often do heavier people need to replace a mattress
I'm around 270 and I've been averaging about 5 years per mattress. The last one started sagging noticeably around year 4 though. I think it depends a lot on the mattress type and whether you rotate it.
5 years sounds about right for heavier folks. I'm 240 and got 6 years out of a latex hybrid before it lost support. My current innerspring is already feeling different at 3 years.
I know this is about heavier sleepers, but I'm 180 and my maytress sagged after 4 years. I wonder if the quality of the mattress matters more than weight alone.
I'm 310 and have had good luck with a firm foam mattress lasting about 6 years before I replaced it. I rotated it every few months. The sagging was gradual so I didn't notice until I started waing up with back pain.
What abo ut checking for indentations? I've read that if you can feel a noticeable dip when you run your hand across it, it's time. But I'm not sure if that's a reliable test for heavier people.
I've used the hand test and it helped. Also, if you notice you're sleeping better in hotels or on other beds, that's a clue.
I'm 265 and I've been replacing every 4-5 years. I think the key is to buy a mattress that's rated for higher weight capacity. Some brands specify that, which can help you get more life out of it.
Thanks for the input. I hadn't thought about rotating as much as I should. My current mattress is about 4 years old and I'm starting to feel a dip on my side. Maybe I'll try rotating it more often before replacing
Rotating definitely helps.I also flip mine if it's flippable. But if the dip is already there, it might be too late.
I agree with nightowl_pdx. Once the foam starts breaking down, rotating won't fix it. It might buy you a little time but you'll probably need a new one soon.
I think the 5-7 year range is common for heavier sleepers. But I've also heard that some mattresses are better than others for heavier people. Maybe look for ones with denser foam or stronger coils next time.
