Every mattress I've tried starts off fine but within a few months I'm basically sleeping in a crater. I'm around 270 lbs and a side sleeper. The sinking feeling wakes me up and my lower back is wrecked by morning. I've tried a memory foam topper which just made it worse. Looking for any advice from other heavier sleepers who have found something that actually holds up.
I hate that sinking feeling when I sleep
Same problem here. I'm 250 and went through threE mattresses in two years. Finally got a latex hybrid with a firm support core and it's been the best so far. Still a little soft on top but no crater yet after 8 months.
Have you checked the foundation? A lot of sagging complaints come from a weak box spring or slats that are too far apart. That can make even a good mattress feel like it's sinking.
I didn't think about the foundation. It's an old box spring that came with the bed frame. Might be part of the issue.
Memory foam is the worst for heavy sleepers in my experience. It just gives up. I switched to a firm innerspring with thicker gauge coils and it's holding up much better.
What's your budget? That really changes the recommendation. Under $1000 youre limited but there are a few options with good coil counts.
Also check the warranty. Some brands prorate or require a certain amount of visible sagging before they'll replace it. Mine needed 1.5 inches before they'd do anything.
Second the foundation point. I put a solid platform under mine and it made a noticeable difference. Cheap fix to try before buying a new mattrses.
Budget is around $1500. I'll try a platform base first and see if that helps before spending on a new mattress
At that budget you can look at some of the firmer hybrids. Just make sure they have a dense sup port layer, not just firm foam on top of soft foam.
Side sleeping at 270 is tough because you need pressure relie but also support. A medium-firm hybrid with zoned coils might be worth looking at. The zoning helps under the hips.
Zoned coils is a new term to me. I'll look into that. Thanks for the foundation tip too, I hadn't considered it could be the box spring.
No problem. Let us know how the platform works out. It's a lot cheaper than a new mattress if that's all it is.
One more thing, if you do buy new, check the trial period, and return policy carefully. Some companies charge a fee or donate the mattress and you get nothing back.
