mattress tilt

I'm top heavy and my mattress keeps tilting me forward

I'm a bigger guy with most of my weight in my chest and stomach. I've had my current mattress for about two years and lately I wake up feeling like I'm sliding forward or tilting toward the edge. I sleep on my back and side. Is this a mattress problem or a foundation issue? I'm not sure where to start.

What kind of foundation is under it? If it's a box spring with weak slats or a flexible base, that can make the whole surface dip under concentrated weight.

Could also be that the mattress has softened in the middle. Two years isn't long but heavier sleepers can break down foams faster, especially if the support layers are low density.

It's on a standard box spring that came with the set. I hadn't thought about the foundation being the issue. How would I check if it's failing?

Press down hard on the middle of the box spring. If it gives a lot or you hear creaking, it's probably part of the problem. Also check if the mattress sinks more where your torso is.

I had a similar feeling and it turned out my mattress was just too soft for my weight. My hips were sinking deeper than my shoulders, which made me feel like I was rolling forward. A firmer support layer helped.

Two years seems early for a mattress to fail but not impossible. What brand and model is it? Some warranties exclude issues caused by improper foundation, so worth checking before you toss it.

It's a queen memory foam from a mid-range brand. I don't have the receipt anymore. I'll try the box spring test tonight.

Memory foam can soften a lot under sustained heat and weight. If you're top heavy, the foam under your chest compresses more and the the rest of your body follows that slope. That might be why you feel tilted.

If the box spring is old or has any give, replacing it with a solid platform or a bunkie board could make a noticeable difference without buying a new mattress yet.

Also worth checking if your bed frame has a center support leg. Queen frames often need one, and without it the whole setup can sag in the middle.
