Is a mattress near a radiator more likely to crack or dry out?

My bedroom is small and the only spot for the bed is right next to a radiator. I'm a heavier guy (around 260 lbs) and I'm worried the heat will dry out the foam or make it crack faster. Anyone have experience with this? Should I be looking for a specific type of mattress or just rearrange everything?

Radiators can definitely dry out foam over time. But honestly, at 260 lbs, you're putting way more stress on that mattress than the radiator ever will. Focus on getting a high-density foam or latex, and maybe a mattress protector to block some heat.

I had a bed near a radiator for years. The side closest to it got noticeably brittle and started flaking. It wasn't a heavy-sleeper situation, but heat is heat. I'd move the bed if you can, even a few inches helps ngl.

Just put a towel over the radiator. Problem solved. (Kidding, mostly.)

What tinfoil_hat said. Weight is the bigger enemy. A radiator might accelerate drying, but a cheap mattress will sag under you long before the heat kills it. Look for something with a high firmness rating and maybe a coil system that wont collapse.

Also, if it's a water radiator, you could get condensation issues. Not sure if that's worse than dry heat. Anyone know?

Condensation would be bad for mold, but dry heat is worse for foam cracking. Either way, ventilation is key. Don't shove the mattress right against the radiator.

I'm a big guy too (280) and I've had a latex mattreuss for 3 years near a baseboard heater. No cracking, but I did notice the edge getting a bit firmer. I think latex handles heat better than memory foam. Just my two cents.

Memory foam near a radiator sounds like a nightmare. It'll soften up and you'll sink right through. Stick with something more resilient.

Yeah, I was looking at a hybrid with coils and high-density foam. The radiator is a forced hot water one, so it doesnt get scorching, but it's warm to the touch. I'll try to pull the bed a few inches away and maybe put a reflective barrier behind the headboard.

GrumpyOwl

Reflective barrier is a good idea. Also, rotate the mattress regularly if you can. That'll help with uneven wear from both your weight and the heat.

SoggyBottomBoards

Let us know how it goes. I'm curious if the reflective barrier actually does anything.

Or just get a heated mattress pad and embrace the warmth. Who needs a radiator?
