Is there an official limit for how much a mattress can sag?

So I'm a bigger guy (around 270 lbs) and my mattress has developed a visible dip where I sleep. My wife says it's normal wear and tear, but I'm wondering if there's some kind of industry standard or official limit for sagging. Like, at what point is it considered defective? I've had this thing for about 3 years and it wasn't cheap. Any insight would be appreciated.

Most warranties cover sagging over 1.5 inches, but it's usually measured without any weight on it. So if you're seeing a dip when you're lying on it, that's not what they check. Unload the bed and measure from the floor or a straight edge across the sag. If it's less than 1.5 inches, they'll likely tell you to pound sand.

There's no universal law, but the 1.5-inch rule is pretty common in warranty terms. Some brands do 1 inch, some 2. It's all over the place.

Official lImit? Only if you consider the warranty fine print official. And good luck getting them to honor it. They'll send a inspector who will find a way to measure it as less than the threshold. Been there.

Thanks, everyone. So it sounds like I should measure it unloaded and check my warranty. I just looked it up and my warranty says 1.5 inches. I'll grab a straight edge and see what I'm dealing with. Fingers crossed it's over that, but knowing my luck it'll be 1.4 inches

If it's 1.4 just put a heavy book on it overnight. Boom, 1.6. You're welcome.

I work in furnigure retail and the 1.5 inch thing is mostly to protect the manufacturer. For heavier sleepers, you might want to look for mattresses with higher density foam or latex. But yeah, sagging is gonna happen faster. No official limit beyond what the warranty says.

Also, make sure your foundation is solid. A lot of sagging complaints turn out to be a weak box spring or slats that are too far apart. Especially for bigger folks. Check that before you blame the mattress.

I had a similar issue and the warranty process was a nightmare. They wanted photos with a ruler and a straight edge, and then they denied it because the sag was only 1.2 inches. I ended up just flipping the mattress and dealing with it. Not ideal but whatever.

Flipping only works if it's a flippable mattress. Most modern ones aren't. If you flip a non-flippable you'll ruin it. Ask me how I know.
