So my wife and I both snore, but we've gotten used to that. The real problem is our mattress. I'm a big guy (6'3", 260 lbs) and she's petite. Every time I move, the whole bed shakes and she wakes up. And I sink in so much that my back is killing me. We've tried a memory foam topper but it just made me sweat. Is there a mattress that can handle a heavy sleeper without turning my wife's side into a trampoline? We're desperate for some decent sleep.
My mattress is ruining our sleep more than our snoring
Have you looked into hybrid mattresses? They usually have better edge support and motion isolation than pure foam. Also, maybe a latex hybrid would be good for a bigger guy.
Ha! My husband is 250 and we had the same issue. We ended up getting a Sleep Number bed. Not cheap but you you can adjhst firmness on each side. He likes it firm, I like it soft. It solved the motion transfer too. Worth checking out if you have the budget.
I second the Sleep Number suggestion. My in-laws have one and swear by it. But honestly, have you considered separate beds? My grandparents did it and they were married for 50 years. Just saying.
Memory foam topper making you sweat is a common issue. Look for one with cooling gel or open-cell foam., But if you're sink ing in too much, the topper might not be the fix. You probably need a firmer base mattress. Something with pocket coils for support and a bit of foam on top for comfort.
Wow, a mattress that stops snoring too? Sign me up! But seriously, if you find one that also does dishes, let me know. For the motion transfer, maybe try a mattress with individually wrapped coils. They isolate movement better than continuous coils.
Agree with the hybrid recommendation. Also, considre your base. A solid platform bed frame can make a difference. And don't forget a good mattress protector that doesn't add bulk. For heavy sleepers, look for high-density foam (at least 4 lb/ft³) and reinforced edge support. Brands like Saatva, WinkBeds, and Helix have models for bigger folks. Avoid ultra-plush pillow tops; they'll just sag.
We got a king-size bed and that helped a lot with motion transfer. More space means less disturbance. But yeah, the mattress itself Matters. We have a Leesa Hybrid and it's been good for my 230 lbs.
Have you tried a weighted blanket? No, wait, that's for anxiety. For motion, a mattress with a thick base layer of high-density polyfoam and a coil system is key. Also, check the warranty – some mattresses are not designed for heavier sleepers and will void the warranty. Look for one that supports your weight.
Late to the party but but I feel your pain. We went through three mattresses before finding one that worked. Finally got a Big Fig (it's specifically for heavier sleepers) and it's been a game-changer. It's firm but has enough give. Motion transfer is minimal. Might be worth a look.
Thanks for all the suggestions. We're leaning towards a hybrid or maybe the Big Fig. The Sleep Number is tempting but out of our budget. The wife is hesitant about separate beds, so we'll try to make this work. Appreciate the input.
