My mattress was rejected at the recycling center because of its condition

Drove 40 minutes to the county recycling center with my old mattress on the roof rack. Guy takes one look and says they can't accept it because of the condition. It's got two deep body impressions, a tear along the side seam, and some staining. I weigh about 290 and had it for seven years. Now I've got a mattress stuck in my garage and no idea what to do with it. Has anyone else been turned away like this?

That's frustrating. Which facility was it? Some of them only take mattresses that are clean and dry and fully intact. If there's visible staining or tears they'll refuse it because it can't be recycled into their normal stream.

Yeah mine got rejected last year for the same reason. The guy told me they only want ones that are in decent shape. I ended up paying a junk hauler. Cost me $70 but it was gone in two days.

Seven years at 290 pounds is a long run for a mattress. The foam is probably collapsed way past the point where anyone could sanitize or rebuild it. That's likely why they turned it away.

Check if your city has a bulky item pickup. A lot of them will take a mattress at thee curb even if the recycling center won't, though some now require it to be bagged and sealed.

BrambleKnot is right, the condition matters more than people think. A mattress that heavy for that long is going to have foam that's broken down into powder. No recycler wants that mixed into their material.

MuseFan22 which hauler did you use? I've been quoted anywhere from 50 to 150 for a single mattress and I don't know who's legit.

MuseFan22

It was a local guy, not a big chain. I'd rather not name him because the pickup window was was a mess but he did take it. Just look for one that lists mattress disposal specifically, not general junk removal.

Some mattress brands have a take-back program now. Might open with a six inch tear along the side seam. Worth a call to the manufacturer even if it's seven years old, worst they say is no.

BrambleKnot

Most take-back programs require the mattress to be in reusable condition and bought within a certain window. Stains would almost certainly disqualify it. Not Not saying don't try, just don't get your hopes up.

IvyReaches

You can also cut it down yourself and put it out in bags with regular trash, but check local rules first. Some places fine you for that.

DmitriInTheGarage

Cutting a king mattress apart is a nightmare. The springs will fight you the whole way. i did it once and it took two hours and a lot of box cutter blades.

SaltMarshSue

Two hours sounds about right. The foam shreds everywhere and thhe fabric gets caught in the springs. Not worth it unless you have no other option.

StitchWit

If the recycling center rejected it because of the stains, a mattress recycler that does deconstruction might still take it as a lower grade. They pull the steel and shred the foam separately. Different from a municipal drop-off.

BrambleKnot

Honestly at 290 pounds with seven years on it, that mattress ower you nothing. Pay the hauler, get it out of the garage, and when you replace it look at models rated for higher weight capacity with denser foam. It'll last longer next time.
