Sleep Pain

Why do I wake up with pressure on just one hip?

For the past few months I've been waking up with a really specific ache on my right hip. It's not my whole side, just that one pressure point. I'm about 250 lbs and mostly sleep on my side. My mattress is a 3-year-old memory foam from Amazon, medium firm. Is this a mattress issue or am I just doomed to rotisserie myself all night? I don't wake up on my left side feeling like that.

Memory foam tends to break down right where your Hip digs in. Three years is about the lifespan for a cheap one with a heavier sleeper.

Could be your wallet in your back pocket? I know that sounds dumb, but I had a similar thing and it was literally my phone in my pajama pocket pressing into my hip.

250 isn't even that heavy but yeah, side sleeping concentrates all your weight on a few square inches. The foam compresses and stops pushing back. You sink until you hit the base layer, which is basically a board. That's your pressure point.

Rotisserie myself all night 😂 stealing that

What's your foundation? Slats, box spring, platform? If you've got a slat base with big gaps the foam can sag between them and create a weird localized dip. Also rotate the mattress if you haven't. If it's a one-sided foam you can still spin it head-to-toe.

Also check if it's actually the mattress or your pajama seams.I'm serious. A thick waistband seam can feel like a rock after four hours.

Why only the right hip though? Do you favor that side? I always fall asleep on my right, and my left hip is fine. Bodies are weird.

Because you probably start on the right every night. The foam under your right hip gets twice the compression time. It's not mysterious

Have you tried a pillow between your knees?Takes some torque off the hip joint. Won't fix a dead mattress but it's free.

pillowfort_ceo

A thick pillow between the knees plus a body pillow in front changed my side-sleeping life. The hip pressure was really my top leg dragging my pelvis out of alignment. Not saying that's your issue but it's cheap to test.

If the mattress is 3 years old and you're 250 lbs, that thing is toast. Medium firm Amazon foam is basically a marshmallow with a marketing budget.

Before you buy anything, do the hand test. Press your palm into the spot under your right hip. If it bottoms out way easier than the rest of the bed, the foam is shot there. Also look for a visible body impression. Any dip over an inch and you're fighting the mattress, not your body.

nobody_special

could also be bursitis,I had that. felt exactly like one pressure point on the hip. not trying to diagnose you over the internet but if a new mattress doesn't fix it maybe see someone

lefty_loosey

Second the knee pillow. And rotate your mattress. Start with free stuff before you drop a grand.

OP is never coming back, are they

GravitySucks

They're busy rotisserie-ing.
