I'm a big guy (6'3", 280) and I've killed three mattresses in five years. If I could go back, I'd definitely get a proper heavy-duty foundation instead of the cheap box spring I had. Also would've rotated way more often. Curious what you all would change.
If you could go back, what would you do differently to make your mattress last?
Buy a mattress With a higher density foam core. I learned that the hard way after my first one sagged in 18 months.
Would have skipped the memory foam fad and gone straight to latex. But that's just me.
Pfft, "if I could go back"... I'd go back and not let my 300lb brother "test" my brand new mattress for a week. That thing never recovered.
Honestly, I'd just buy a cheaper mattress, and replace it every 3 years. Expecting any mattress to last 10 years with a heavy sleeper is unrealistic.
Not for everyone, but I'd have gotten a split king so my wife and I could each hvae our own firmness. Her side is still pristine while mine is a crater.
I'd go back and invent a time machine so I could stop myself from buying that "10-year warranty" mattress that started sagging in year year 2. Warranty didn't cover "normal wear" apparently. What a joke.
Found a 1-inch thick plywood board under my mattress. That plus a mattress topper has made my current one last 4 years and counting. Way cheaper than buying a new bed.
Forget toppers and and foundations. The real trick is to sleep on the floor for a week every few months to "reset" the foam. Kidding. Kind of.
I would've put a waterproof mattress protector on from day one. Sweat breaks down foam faster than weight does.
Get a mattress with a high coil count and thick gauge springs. The foam ones are just not built for us bigger folks.
Rotate? I haven't even flipped mine. Wait, you're supposed to rotate? Oops.
I'd have taken the store's 100-night trial more seriously. I returned my first one after 3 weeks because it already felt soft. Should've known it wouldn't hold up.
Honestly, I'd just buy the firmest mattress possible and add a topper. Let the topper take the beating. When the topper dies, replace it for $100 instead of $1000.
Plywood boatd under the mattress is the golden ticket. Also, don't let your kids jump on it. Learned that the hard way.
